Maitland Project to Provide Safe, Affordable Accommodation for Patients, Carers and Families.
Each year, thousands of patients receive medical treatments as outpatients of Maitland Hospital and nearby allied health services. Many of these patients and their families and carers are from regional and rural NSW and require appropriate, affordable and accessible accommodation near the hospital, but many are turned away or priced out.
HealthStays, an initiative of the Rotary Clubs of Maitland, is the answer.
This critical community infrastructure will offer dignity, rest, and relief to the patients and their families and carers. HealthStays will provide units for those needing overnight stays before or after procedures, for cancer treatment, surgeries, or when supporting loved ones in palliative or intensive care.
“HealthStays is a place where you don’t have to sleep in your car or stress over a $300 a night hotel bill just to be with your child or partner,” said Trevor Lynch, the Chair of the HealthStay’s Board, and a driving force behind the initiative.
The first stage of 20 units is ready for construction, with a DA in place and a suitable land site identified and needing to be secured by July 2025. Now the project needs community and investor support to raise $9million to complete the first stage of the project and see it operational in 2026. Much local fundraising has been done, but HealthStays is now seeking corporate partnerships to be part of a solution that honours care, connection, and compassion.
